James on the summit of Mt. Haystack, which we did as a variation. Haystack is a pretty incredible formation, with a sub-summit, col and main summit, all rock. There's lots of cool, easy scrambling up to the top.
Our friends had followed us up onto Basin, the peak between Saddleback and Haystack. We had been sitting there eating a bite when they arrived about 10 minutes after us. The woman had indicated that her party planned to climb Haystack and head back to the JBL lodge. "Do you think we can do it?" She had asked. How the hell do you answer such a question? How the hell could you ask it?
The woman had then asked us what we were doing. We both sighed, then I said, "Haystack, then down, then Marcy, then out," pointing out the peaks with a finger.
"What??? Are you crazy?" was the response. "It's 2.30pm. You'll never make it," the woman says. "It's going to get dark!"
These people are lost and unsure if they'll make it out alive, and they're telling us we have problems.
I immediately turned the power off, rather than say something... untoward. James offered, "We have headlamps. We'll be fine."
"Oh," the woman says. We can see the wheels turning now. "We don't have those."
