I checked out the ridge (the upper part of a "broad bench" above Lake Ann, as described in various reports and books; there was a phenomenal amount of snow here, and in more typical conditions, I doubt our campsite would exist) and convinced Brian to laboriously plod on up to a more sheltered vantage where we would be out of the wind and where we could better study the route. If we could ever see it.
Above, I look at a whole lot of nothing. The Chimneys route starts another 300' or so to the right of the mammoth rock buttress visible on the left. The broad snow patch between rock, above where I am standing in the photo, is the entrance to the chimneys. This is very heavy snow cover for the route, as we would find out. We made camp near where I stand in the photo. |
