I decided to go check out the corniced ridgelet, which extended all the way up to Shuksan Arm. It is difficult to make out in this photo, but essentially the shadow on the right of the ridge, where I am walking, is the top of the cornice. The bright white to the left is air.
We had seen ski tracks in the bowl nearer to Shuksan Arm. Whomever had been in was long gone.
We made camp and brewed up hot drinks and soup. We had made a mostly unspoken decision to sleep in, get a good look at the route in the morning, then head up late the next night. We had taken longer to get in than we had hoped, and due to cloud cover, had never gotten a good look at the upper mountain. I wanted to assess snow conditions before heading up blindly. We could see recent and copious evidence of avalanches into the bowl below. I think I might have mentioned this, but there was a lot of snow. |
